• Fiona McIntosh: Voyager Author of the Month

Fiona McIntosh was born and raised in Sussex in the UK, but also spent early childhood years in West Africa. She left a PR career in London to travel and settled in Australia in 1980. She has since roamed the world working for her own travel publishing company, which she runs with her husband. She lives in Adelaide with her husband and twin sons. Her website is at www.fionamcintosh.com.

Her latest book, The Scrivener's Tale, is a stand-alone and takes us back to the world of Morgravia from her very first series, The Quickening:

    About The Scrivener's Tale:

In the bookshops and cafes of present-day Paris, ex-psychologist Gabe Figaret is trying to put his shattered life back together. When another doctor, Reynard, asks him to help with a delusional female patient, Gabe is reluctant... until he meets her. At first Gabe thinks the woman, Angelina, is merely terrified of Reynard, but he quickly discovers she is not quite what she seems.

As his relationship with Angelina deepens, Gabe's life in Paris becomes increasingly unstable. He senses a presence watching and following every move he makes, and yet he finds Angelina increasingly irresistible.

When Angelina tells Gabe he must kill her and flee to a place she calls Morgravia, he is horrified. But then Angelina shows him that the cathedral he has dreamt about since childhood is real and exists in Morgravia.

A special 10th Anniversary edition of her first fantasy book, Myrren's Gift, will be released in December!

Dreaming of good pictures – Again

So … I finally found my camera cable, only to discover that I have managed to take some of the worst and most out-of-focus photos ever to be taken in this world. So the below shot is the only worthy one from Conflux. Okay, to be honest, I mostly forgot about my camera apart from at the launch, at Floriade, and er … on the way home, as you will see.

This pic was taken at the launch of Dreaming Again on Friday night – a little bit before the authors did a mass signing and the wine was opened! And there was plenty more dreaming to come …

The authors of Dreaming Again

The authors of Dreaming Again pose for a pic at the launch of the book.

They are (starting from top left): Keith Stevenson, who proofread the whole anthology (thanks Angela for letting me know), Angela Slatter, Sean McMullen, Russell Blackford, Richard Harland, Aaron Sterns, Adam Browne and Jason Nahrung. Next row starts with Jason Fischer, then it’s Peter M Ball, Jenny Blackford, Trudi Canavan, Kim Westwood, Jack Dann and Stephanie Smith.

To distract you all from my awful picture taking, here is a shot of the place we nicknamed ‘Isengard’, of a tower we could see across the Lake Burley Griffin, which Farnwyn has named for me – it’s the Carillon on Aspen Island, and very poetic it is.

Isengard

Click photo for bigger image. Note artistic rainbow that redeems me for bad photography.

But wait – there’s still hope! A young man and his Dalek made my day by fitting in with my idea of how a con should be – and many thanks to the man in the gold hat and suit who also helped with that idea. And yes, I did ask his permission to take and use this photograph! He exterminated Liz Argall not long afterwards, so I am aware of what he could do if I -didn’t- ask permission!

A Study

Dalek and Boy: A Study

To make you aware of just how exciting and touristy Canberra and the whole trip was for this Sydneysider, here is my classic shot. And be aware, you’ve been spared the mass of Floriade shots that we took.

An Extremely Large Merino. Do Not Mess With The Sheep

An Extremely Large Merino. Do Not Mess With It. It Might Sit On You.

Yes, the big Merino at Goulburn. Photo followed up shortly by McChicken Burger in the tradition of all good road trips. We came home clutching books, feeling inspired and planning to write, write and write. And it was all down to Conflux.

Only one question remains in my brain … I’d like to know if Jason Fischer would come out of Goulburn humming ‘Undead Sheepies Ate Their Flesh … Doo Dah Doo Dah …’

NB. Thanks to Angela and Farnwyn for additional info to edit this post – and I also think this link to Cat Spark’s photos may be much more useful!

  1. Well, better claim my eternal 5 mins of thanks then, taelian. 🙂 Happy to advise that ‘Isengard’ IS indeed the Carillon on Aspen Island, in Lake Burley Griffin (sounds just like ‘gryphon’, the mythical half-eagle creature, and not “wossname”). The island is a favourite location for Canberran’s weddings, esp. in Spring and Autumn, and in past years has been the original venue for the National Shakespeare Festival.

I agree: the rainbow is very well placed.

Also: well done on the giant sheep pic at Goulburn. Jason Fischer singing about undead sheepies? Bizarre. Mind you, Undead Kangaroos probably wouldn’t be any prettier. Undead Tractor Salesmen? Yikes. [Note to self: stop giving away any more ideas for Rural Horror tales before writing them myself; and getting them into print.]

The un-named author in the launch photo: I have an autograph in front of my copy that shows a first name of Chris, and it’s unlikely to be Charles, Chuck, Chas or Chaswinder. Consulting the glowing-with-talent author list from Contents pages, this much info narrows it down to either: Christopher Green or Chris Lynch. After that, can’t be sure, as I don’t know the guy myself and had already indulged in some champers and ale – consumed separately, of course – so hopefully one of the Committee, or maybe the live-wire editor, will be able to track down the surname for you.

    cheers
    Farnwyn

  2. The ‘unknown’ author is actually our proofreader, Keith Stevenson – also a very talented editor and writer himself 🙂

  3. The Dreaming launch was very fine indeed, it’s no wonder it sold out.

Gorgeous photo of the Carillion, Canberra is lovely this time of year.

  4. and it’s definitely not Chris Green, who has the world’s most awesome beard, and it’s not Chris Lynch, who is hiking across Japan at this point in time (poor bloke hasn’t even SEEN the anthology!!).

As for humming about Giant Sheepies and the eating of flesh, you may just have jump-started something very wrong in my brain, something involving Giant Things and their violent and brutal uprising against the stupid Australians who erect these countless structures.

I’m sure it’s been done, but not by me 🙂

  5. […] So far I’ve found photos at the Voyager blog […]

  6. Answer to the the ‘mystery man’ photo puzzle -thanks, Angela -good to get a complete author list for that historic photo. Now I only have an autograph puzzle to solve. D’oh! 🙂

I’m looking forward to reading ‘The Jacaranda Wife’ very shortly.

    cheers
    Farnwyn

  7. Angela – thanks for the info – I’ve updated the post!
I wonder which Chris signed your book, Farnwyn, a bit disturbing! And your five mins of thanks is offiially over, already ^ ^. Who is the mystery person – did one of you DA authors impersonate a Chris? There were certainly some spectacular beards over the weekend …
Jason – I don’t think I even want to know what’s broiling in your head now! I bet you secretly love all the Giant Things (or maybe am just divulging my own badly kept secret) – I wouldn’t want to see any of them rampaging and taking bites out of people, though. Or sitting on anyone.

  8. The mysterious ‘Chris’ autograph: thanks for the clarification, Jason. Well, I’m now officially hornswoggled and bemused, but after spending lavishly at the book tables cannot yet hire expertise of a graphologist or rune expert.
I wonder if that Dirk Gently sleuth character is looking for something to do?
